Hi Fellow Sailors -
Hope you are all surviving the cold snap here in SWFL.
Thank you to everyone who registered for the John Kretschmer presentation next week. Over 80 people signed up! What a great representation of sailors and boaters in SWFL.
On deck we have the Presidents Regatta, Panther Key, and Marathon Key cruises. I know it's (dang) cold now but soon we will be seeing the amazing SW Florida weather most of us moved down here for. Check your calendars and if you are able to participate, be sure to register or shoot us an email. See below for more information.
Unfortunately, the algae bloom on Lake Avalon is still keeping the lake closed so our Sugden Sailing dates are on hold until further notice.
Freedom Waters Foundation is celebrating its 20th year anniversary with a Roaring Twenties theme that honors two decades of therapeutic boating impact. The 12th annual Kind Mariners Ball will be held at the Naples Yacht Club February 19, 2026. If you are interested, join us by reserving your tickets.
|
Stay tuned, read your newsletters, visit the club website, and if you are interested in getting involved in any of these activities, please reach out to me via the email below.
Cheers,
Bob Andreini

We are in desperate need of people to volunteer their boat to serve as the Race Committee boat for Saturday February 28
You will be reimbursed for gas and receive a free awards dinner ticket!
This is an amazing opportunity to observe the Race Committee and our PROs in action. As well as observe the race from a great vantage point! You get to see the exciting starts and finishes as well as the wind/strategy happening out on the course.
If every racer volunteered their boat, you would only miss one race every 5-6 years or more! What a great way to give back to the club!
The Race Committee consists of 4 people and the flags.
We are also in need of a volunteer for a Mark boat for the same dates. If you know of anyone who has a motor boat that would like to volunteer, we reimburse for gas for them as well.
Please let me know if you are willing to volunteer as soon as possible.
I appreciate your consideration and if you have any questions, please contact me.

Pink Shell Cruise
Jan 16-29, 2026
This was a really fun event to kick off our cruising season. We had about 10 people and 4 boats come up to the Pink Shell Resort and Marina. Yes, it was cold, but that's why we schedule our January event to be at a marina with power! Temperatures got into the low 40's and challenged our heaters but fortunately it all worked out.
Saturday was a bit cool for the beach or pool, so we went to Margaritaville, did some shopping in Ft. Myers Beach and then docktails on the boats. Several people joined us by land and by boat who were not staying at the marina. This is a great way to meet and hang out with fellow cruisers.
While at lunch Sunday there a windstorm come out of the north with winds up to 50 mph for a good 20-30 minutes then tapered down to 30 kts for several hours before settling down. Fortunately, one of our landside members were able to drive us back to the marina where it took several people to better secure the boats from slamming against the docks. Important note: always tie up assuming the worst.
Monday was very low tide and had to delay our departure by about 3 hours but at least it was a bit warmer and we had a nice downwind sail back to Naples.

Panther Key Cruise
Feb 15-17, 2025
Remote Island 25nm south of Marco
This year it's been hard to plan this event as I'm not able to make it and we don't have a cruise leader for it. That's why it's not on the calendar. I've received a couple of calls asking if the event is on. Officially it's not, however, I know at least one boat going for sure. Others are considering it.
If you are interested, send an email to cruising@gulfcoastsailingclub.org and I will connect those interested. We have a very nice document with some detailed instructions on how to navigate the Cape Romano Sholes and where to anchor. I'd be happy to send it to anyone who requests it.

Cruising Marathon Key
April 1 - 5, 2026
Marlin Bay Resort and Marina
If you are interested in Marathon this year, please contact me as soon as possible so we can make arrangements at the Marlin Bay Marina. They have good availability in the inner basin starting April 1, which is why we adjusted the dates to be April 1 - 7. There is limited availability and probably in the outer basin prior to April 1.
Marathon Key is a lot of fun, and you can make part of a larger trip to Key West, or even the Dry Tortugas. You can find out more information by visiting the Club Website.
If you are interested, send an email to cruising@gulfcoastsailingclub.org and I will coordinate all the details with you and the marina.
