The Naples Black Cup Invitational Challenge

Yes, Naples has a number of
sailing cups and awards, but the GCSC's Naples Spin B Revival Association
(NSBRA) of smaller spin boats was not able to quite come up with a world class
level silver cup such as the America's Cup at the left.
However, the group was able to find
a silver cup that could come close both in look and age.
Testament to its age is this
fine platina that gives the cup its deep black salt encrusted tone that the cup
is named after. And the additional benefit of this deep natural color is that
there is absolutely no need to waste non-sailing time with
polishing.
Also
working for the Naples Black Cup is that it holds enough Michelob or Bud Light
to provide a round for the winning crew with just one trip to the ice cold keg,
and it keeps that refreshment reasonably cool on the way. For the younger crowd
... it also holds orange juice very
nicely.
Unlike many sailing
challenges the Black Cup acknowledges that theroretical PHRF ratings may not
reflect reality. The Black Cup adds an

equalizer based on previous completed challenge races
that evens the playing field. Competitors do not have to have brand new sails
every year, or a "professional"
crew.
The objective is to have races where nearly everyone corrects to a close finish
that reflects the best attempt of each crew and boat to do the best they can
with what they got. We also like to race in
sight of each other so low or

high PHRF ratings are generally
not invited to compete in the Challenge Races. There is an exception in that
low PHRF rated boats may be able to compete with a modified sail plan. High PHRF boats may be given up
to a 15 min. head start. There is no "second" or "third" in these challenge
races.

The winner gets
to hold the cup until the next challenge.
Challenges may piggyback on a formal regatta race, a less formal "arranged" challenge race,
or other alternatives as long as the race is over seven miles in length. For
example, the first Challenge Race of the season is generally piggybacked on the
Naples Yacht Club's 90 mile offshore race in October. The first Challenge Race
of 2009 was based on the

10.7 mile NS&YC New
Year's Cup Race. In November '08 the Marco Island Yacht Club ran a pursuit race
that was ideal for the Black Cup
Challenge. To foster the development of
additional invitees the NSBRA runs a Spin Training Program, and has a
Spin Crew Call List. To get on the NSBRA

 Most boats sailing with
spinnakers require 4-7 crew and, as such, sailing spin is crew hungry. We
welcome all members of the GCSC to develop their spin sailing skills with us.
NOTE TO SKIPPERS: We probably will be
able to find crew for you ... most will need a little time on the water to get
used to your boat ... contact

Shock for Record Crew Number |
What do you do when a few extra crew show up
for a race? Well, in keeping with the mission of the Gulf Coast Sailing Club's
Spin B Revival Association to get people active in Spin B -- you take them
along. So far the record rests with Shock who managed to
gather a crew of 11 for the 2/7/09 Challenge Race. Shock will hold on to the
cup until another boat beats this race crew record. |

FAQ: 1. Do I have to use a spin on a
pole? No. Challenge boats can use any kind of spin, either with or
without dousing sock, with or without pole ... the reason for the length of the
races being at a minimum of 5 miles is to allow racers to enjoy sailing under
the spin without the constant need of hoisting and dousing that occurs with the
standard WL races. The Black Cup Challenge races hopefully will serve to make
spin sailing more relaxed and enjoyable. 2. Do I have to actually sign up
with the Race Organizer to participate in a Regatta piggyback
challenge? Yes. The offical race results are used to resolve a cup
challenge. 3. Who determines the winner of a challenge? The Gulf
Coast Sailing Club Commodore and Rear Commodore are the basic committee that
resolves the winner of a Challenge.
