September, 2012 ... Blind Nationals
Naples Team hosted by Vee Jay in Newport

The Collier County/Naples team of Kris Scheppe, driver; Bill Meismer, coach/tactician; Lee Gates, jib trimmer; and Tina Kurys, main trimmer; participated in the U.S. Blind Nationals in Newport. After one day of practice on Vee Jay and one day practice in J/22 Boat 1 at 7-12 kts breeze ... the first day of racing saw steady 17 with shifty gusts to 25.

Unfortunately, Tina got caught in the main sheet during a gibe and broke her arm in the first race. The fleet shared a number of roundups going upwind, and a number of unexpected gibes sailing directly downwind on the W/L course. Tina, after a painful second race, was off-loaded to a coach boat, shipped over to Newport YC, then to the Newport Hospital emergency room.

Fortunately ER was empty when she arrived, so they were able to splint up her arm so that she was able to make it back to Sail Newport for the Saturday afternoon after racing Beer Bash.

The Team was unable to find a blind substitute as required by the rules, but RC allowed Cap'n Vic to take her place on Sunday. Fortunately, Sunday the wind was 7-12. And the team was scored 5th.

Key West 2012 Bone Island Regatta

Results

Great race and fun in Key West! This regatta celebrates the end of the Winter sailing season. This year 48 sailboats started from Tampa, Sarasota, and Naples; and finished a challenging race at the Hyatt Resort in Key West.

The sailors, greeted by the Slavi Girls sponsored by Slavianskaya Vodka were directed to the first of five private parties during the next two days. For the early finishers, "Thirsty Thursdays" at the Hyatt Resort bar began the festivities moving on to Mango's with good food and camaraderie. Friends and family came to Key West by land and air to share the revelry and added to the mix of several hundred kindred spirits.

Saturday morning, we were at the Galleon for mimosas, etc., and later boarded a bus headed a special event at the Stock Island Yacht Club. A short stop at Turtle Kraals was the warm up for the awards dinner at Dante's. Music, and dancing, and celebration, as the sailors shared their tragedies and triumphs. The Bone Island Regatta is a highlight of the year for many of us. Some have sailed this event many times over the years, and lasting friendships have been cemented during those long hours at sea. Shenanigans on the Lake Regatta

Eighteen sailors of various ages and abilities raced on Lake Avalon Mar. 10, leaving wheelchairs, crutches and their personal assistants ashore to compete against one another on Access 303s. Members of GCSC were there to "coach." For more information on how you might get involved, contact Debra Frenkel, at 305-588-2082.

1st Annual GCSC Sugden Park Regatta
Over 125 showed up for the 1st annual GCSC Sugden Park Regatta Feb. 26 on Lake Avalon as our members and guests tried out four Optis, three Precision 15s, three 420s, a Hobie and a Laser. About a third of the guests qualified as the "younger" set. During the afternoon nearly all those boats were out simultaneously.

Bill set up a W/L race course and we had two twice around races with a mixed fleet of three Optis, three Precisions, two 420s and the Laser. You had to be there to appreciate it.

Rough count of 150 burgers and an unknown tally of dogs were cooked up by the Commodore and his personal staff. Loads of thanks go to the hard working staff at Sugden Sailing ... including the 7-year-old volunteer showing the Rear Commodore how to pack a jib.
